Theme inspired by an owl that has awakened me several nights in the last month. I believe it to be living in a large oak tree near my house. H.J. Ford illustration.
Owls ornamenting the collegiate Gothic buildings of Bryn Mawr College. Photos taken by me, 2004.
beautiful! love the illustration, imagine if they were that large! yikes.
I bought this book in the Young Adult section of a bookstore for the cover alone. How could I not? http://www.amazon.com/Owl-Keeper-Christine-Brodien-Jones/dp/0385738145/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282842083&sr=1-1
oh, I love all of these! Especially that illustration! The carving of the two with the book is so sweet. I really want to do this: http://www.raptorrehab.org/raptorAdoption.html
Robin I'm really enjoying Ford's illustrations more and more. Didn't realize he was a friend of Burne-Jones, but I can now see a few similarities in style.
Raptor Rehab: What a wonderful thing to participate in! Their logo is lovely too.
I love owls. We have them around and see them sometimes, swooping silently right on dusk. It's my photographic ambition to get a photo of one some evening. I enjoyed your photos - thankyou.
There is a nice post about the symbolic meanings of owls:

I used to have one when I lived deep in the country. Bit spooky late at night but it kept the mice down.
Thank you so much for the additional info!
ReplyDeleteHow cool to have one as a "pet". This one is very outspoken.

Oh how I love owls, I have never seen one in the wild though. Heard them of course!
ReplyDeleteJen - Thanks. The illustration reminds me a bit of my expression when I saw a large owl flying around the corner of the house chasing birds.
ReplyDeleteThat book is adorable!!
Wanderkin - Me too!! I've seen several on my property which I think are Great Horned Owls.
