Merry Tales of Maid Marian

From the opening scene of wildlife at dawn to the sighing Green Man, Robin Hood is a visual feast. This is the 1991 version starring Patrick Bergen & Uma Thurman. The costumes, in my opinion, are beautiful - simple, natural fabrics with rich details and sombre lighting, forests with mist, moss and mummers.

I've never seen a cat on a table in a medieval movie. This looks more like my house, sans the meat.

  1. Hmmm, may have to check this out. BTW, are you familiar with author Rosemary Sutcliff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary_Sutcliff) She's the one who wrote the book that "Eagle of the 9th" was based on. In addition to her Roman Britain novels, She has several medieval setting books. I've gotten the Roman Britain ones. Several are available for Kindle, which I also have.

    1. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I'm not familiar with her writing - sounds wonderful and I see she did Tristan & Isolde too! Adding to my wish list:)

    1. Eeeks on the weather. We had a storm and tornado warnings this morning; cleared up to nearly 70 degrees!

I was happy to have found a dvd version of this on my last trip to Boston.

    3. Oh, hope you aren't going to lose power. That does indeed sound frightening.

The reply thing is new to me too - I didn't do anything different to get it. I go away for a bit and come back to a brand new world!

    1. Joel - It is very interesting and may have been made for TV. This version focuses on the Norman/Saxon feud with a bit of nasty Prince John in for good measure.

    1. As a big Robin Hood fan, I highly recommend it. If memory serves, it came out about the same time as the Kevin Costner version.

    1. There is indeed!!! The brown dress she has on is her wedding gown! I didn't get any good close-up details of it but it is brown - looks like wool, with that beautiful ivy-leaf or floriated detail on neckline and sleeves and there is an underdress of a coral color. Also some pretty chapel decor that you may find interesting. All lovely!

    2. Uh nice. :) I have this idea that I want to make a monthly - medieval wedding in movies - entry :) I'll be sure to remember this one.
And the dress is very nice.:)

    3. Cecilie - another good ones is Excalibur. Guinevere wears a shimmery silver/white gown; not of the period, but the movie as more of a mythic overtone.

    1. Tricia - How I still hold the memory of your Mad Catter tea party in my head - your gorgeous yellow kitties munching the scones! This movie is obviously full of amateurs with that single cat on the table! pfffft.

I digress. It is a delightful movie, full of green forests and adventure. Both the women's and men's costumes have an authentic feel to them. Many blessings to you.
