Sweet dreams
Wouldn't this be the perfect bedroom? Like a ruin in a forest, vines and branches snaking their way in, gothic windows open to the sky and a canopy of stars. A beautiful bower.
Gertrude in Gormenghast is one of my favorite fictional characters. Not really admirable for her human parenting skills - she asks the nanny to "bring him back when he is six" in reference to her own baby, Titus. But she adorns and contents herself with a herd of snow-white cats and a white rook, giving them unconditional love and affection. A woman after my own heart!
The detailed artistry of Gertrude’s bodice,
the buttons designed to mimic hazelnuts.

Ooo, yes! Sort of reminds me of Titania's bower in Midsummer.
ReplyDeleteI really need to watch Gormenghast. Moving it up the queue!
The DVD quality I have is poor, wonder if it has been remastered? So many of the Harry Potter actors are in it.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to describe the costumes in this as "encrusted".
i loved gormenghast, feel i really want to watch it again now!!

ReplyDeleteMe too! Even though it is kind of dark, sad at times, it has a dreamlike quality that lightens the tone. Loved the cat's room!
i love this room and her herd of cats-they have a fabulous room as well! love her costumes and the others and i had to laugh when she said to the nanny, "bring him back when he is 6"! yikers, ba is going to be 7 soon and i am making him a gilded holy grail for his birthday! need to get going!
ReplyDeleteI was so distracted when I watched this a while ago, definitely needs a revisit! LOVE that green velvet bodice...wow. Agreed on her magical arch window over greened bedroom!
ReplyDeleteI always love when designers create a bedroom that makes nature outside a part of it! Something about the combination of each! There's something magical and moving about it, like dreams. Maybe I should create a collage of my own as I would like to see it. Thanks for this post and the inspiration!

Oh my gosh, SO gorgeous. I still need to see this. I want to, but Netflix doesn't have it :(

ReplyDeleteThe cat room was so fantastical - the cubby holes!
You should do that in your house.
Jen
ReplyDeleteI think I've seen it about 10 times and notice something new with each viewing. Can you imagine the climbing our cats could do in that bedroom?
Kirsten
ReplyDeleteMagical is a perfect description of this room...like the warm caress of a dream.
The arch caught my eye immediately! The light bathes the room with a glow, like a clearing in a magical (yes!) forest.

ReplyDeleteIt seems the perfect room for good dreams and restful sleep, doesn't it?
What a stunning bedroom and I adore the bodice. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteJno,
ReplyDeleteI'd never get out of bed if my room looked like that:)
I love Gormenghast, though I must say Gertrude is one of my least favourite characters. That being said, she has a fabulous bedroom! Fantastic set decoration.
ReplyDeleteMargaret
ReplyDeleteThere certainly are some memorable characters in Gormenghast, each with their own set of personality flaws. Baby Titus was so beautiful:)
Set and costumes are indeed fantastic!
I want a bedroom like that! Just stumbled on yur blogger..its me, SalemsMom! :-)
ReplyDeleteHello CatHerder,
ReplyDeleteWelcome. I suppose I should make an LJ post to point friends to this more visual blog. Isn't this room gorgeous? And cat friendly.
Great user name by the way:)
loved the scenery & costumes in this production, want to see it again now, is it available on dvd, shall have to go check
ReplyDeleteRuthie
ReplyDeleteYes, it is available on DVD (I have an old VHS that isn't so great). The entire production is like a strange, hazy, yet lovely dream.
Like having a bedroom in the heart of a forest.
ReplyDeleteCynthia - it is very "tree house" for grown ups, right?
