Scanned from Celtic Mythology, this image is a piece of needlework/embroidery that depicts Vivien, The Lady of the Lake enclosing Merlin in an invisible circle, thus binding his powers.
The details in this are just incredible. I can't even imagine how vivid the colours would have been originally. The little creatures in the background are splendid as well (I think that's actually one of my favourite things about medieval needlework--there is so much imagination at work!).
Margaret - there is a second "half" of this piece and from the shape, I suspect it may have been a purse. Not sure of the age, but I'm always stunned that fabrics + textiles survive as often as they do.
Oh, I love this! Very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteRo, somehow I just knew you would:)
ReplyDeleteThis is so mysterious and beautiful. Just my kind of art! Have a beautiful weekend. Anita
ReplyDeleteAnita - this is an amazing piece of art. Wish I had it gracing my own home. We'll both have to be content with crowns I suppose.
